TYLER JAMES WHITTIER

Meet our Founder, Tyler James.
Tyler’s passion for sharing how hairdressing changed his life, ultimately turned his dream of owning a hair school into his reality.

Tyler’s 18 years in the industry pack a big punch!

The Seattle born, Scottsdale based Hairdresser opened his first salon at the age of 21 and quickly started motivating students as a Guest Artist at Paul Mitchell hair schools across Texas and Arizona. Determined to reach the top, Tyler climbed his way up to platform artist earning a spot on the coveted Angus M Team. Traveling with Paul Mitchell he shared the stage with world-renowned artists such as Global Artistic Director Robert Cromeans and Tabatha Coffey.

From being a published hairdresser in Modern Salon Magazine to a top five finalist at the North American Hairstyling Awards, Tyler’s message of working with precision and purpose has proven to pay off.

In 2020, Tyler saw the opportunity to make his dream and vision a reality. With a loud leap of faith, Social Citizen Academy arose! Today, Tyler continues to educate, motivate and empower his students. His energy and excitement for Hairdressing combined with his commitment story of overcoming challenges, continues to inspire the next generation of hairstylists.

Some exciting new things that Tyler has coming up this year include a re-launch of his brand of hair care products, a new licensing partnership with Kensington Makeup Academy and developing a new show based on the academy and his life.

Tyler James, a third generation hairdresser, with over 15 years behind the chair, he has an amazing energy and excitement about this industry and educating future stylists. Tyler’s unique ability to look at you and instantly envision your next transformation is what draws his clients in. Tyler always works with precision and purpose and holds himself to the highest standard, which has led him to being a salon owner at just 21 years old, a platform artist with Paul Mitchell and NAHA top 5 finalist in 2013. Tyler is passionate about sharing his knowledge with up and coming stylist’s in the industry. It all started with his own assisting program in his salon’s, he saw there was a lacking in the industry which inspired him to open Social Citizen Academy. He is passionate about sharing what this industry can do for someone’s life, as it has for his. He has the amazing gift of leadership and education, especially within his salon’s which has led many stylists to flourishing careers. He continues to inspire everyone around him, not only the client in his chair, but the stylists in his salon and future stylists. He is changing the mentality of hairdressing!

JESSICA DANIELLE

Jessica Danielle, a distinguished hair stylist and makeup artist has immersed herself in the professional beauty industry for 14 years. Although Jessica started her career as a salon owner, she quickly realized that she was sitting on gifts and talents that would take her to a new level in the industry. A published artist in Modern Salon Magazine and editorial session stylist backstage at New York Fashion Week, Jessica’s strong ability to work with precision and purpose allows her to create the best outcome for each guest. Jessica’s clients are drawn to her sweet spirit, her consistency and her dedication to delivering the highest level of service.

Carlito Villanueva

Meet our Director, Carlito Villanueva.

Carlito’s commitment to upgrade the industry through educating the next generation of hairdressers has led to his many successes and ultimately becoming Director of Education at Social Citizen Academy.

With over 20 years of hairdressing under his belt, Carlito’s industry experience gives him a well-rounded, dynamic edge as an educator.

The Alaska born, Scottsdale based Hairdresser started his career at Toni and Guy during one of the most influential hair movements of our time. In his second year with Toni and Guy, Carlito became an Educator and quickly got promoted to Salon Director. After climbing to District Educator and Manager he began developing products, filming trainings and presenting on stage with the industry’s leading hairdressers. While proving himself a true leader, Carlito became the youngest franchise salon owner and ranked top five in the nation, for an entire decade!

From working over seas in Italy and London to becoming a Celebrity Hairstylist, Carlito’s dedication to his craft has proven to launch him into new career opportunities. Working with the cast of Glee and rock band Gin Blossoms have translated into special teaching moments through his artistry.

Toni and Guy was a European hair company breaking into the hair scene here in the states. Their salons and schools were blazing the trail and setting the trends, merging high fashion with hair.

In his second year with Toni and Guy, Carlito became an Educator to the staff and quickly got promoted to Salon Director. After climbing to District Educator and Manager he began developing products, filming trainings and presenting on stage with the industry’s leading hairdressers. While proving himself a true leader, Carlito became the youngest franchise salon owner and ranked top five in the nation, for an entire decade!

From working over seas in Italy and London to becoming a Celebrity Hairstylist, Carlito’s dedication to his craft has proven to launch him into new career opportunities. Working with the cast of Glee and rock band Gin Blossoms have translated into special teaching moments through his artistry.

Carlito is the Director at Social Citizen Academy. He has been in the hair industry for over 20 years. He started his career with Tony & Guy in Phoenix, Arizona. The company that started Bedhead and Catwalk haircare products. After his second year with the company he became a staff educator. Shortly then after he was promoted to be the director of the salon. With his great achievements and success he was then promoted to to transfer to Tucson, Arizona in 2011 to be the district educator and district manager of their salons. With his time spent in Tucson. Carlito has produced many other staff educators as well as promoted and trained managers. Because of his experience and leadership he was granted ownership of to Toni&Guy salons.
Carlito also has been on the Vegas stage either hosting an award ceremony or teaching retail sales classes. The industry has led him over seas to Italy and London where he got to work on photoshoots and an education video. He has worked on various celebrities from the cast of Glee to the old-school rock ‘n’ roll band, the Gin Blossoms. With great pleasure, we have acquired him and his vast knowledge of the business. He has vowed to help upgrade the industry as a whole, and believes that educating the future hairdressers is the key to that success.
